Couple of things
- Athens-Clarke County Attorney Bill Berryman is more than incredulous in this article. 'It's a topic of interest' ... really? This little crusade you've stubbornly waged against the charitable community has forced it to be 'a topic of interest' the way I see it.
- This is a sensible decision. Our government should pursue efficiency and savings where they can, and the establishment of a mandate that compels them to buy local could impact that. It's a noble thing, to be sure, but it's not always the appropriate course of action. Given that Athens-Clarke County already invests roughly a third of its spending in the community for said services, that's a fine place to start for me.
- Dustin waded into weird waters on this one, and I think his hyperbole is over the top. Listen, typos happen ... they happen here at this blog and they happen at his blog (I spied three in that post criticizing typos without even trying) and, yes, they happen at established mainstream media outlets. Likewise, this isn't an error that fundamentally misrepresents an issue or topic, but rather a slip of the finger in one singular instance. Should it featured a correction? Of course! Typos and errors often need them, and it's perfectly reasonable to expect one in this situation. However, equating the Athens Banner-Herald to Fox News is one of more surreal - and misleading - things I've read in a long time.
- I'm trying to track down a copy of the actual report, but, yes, most of these proposals don't merely seem politically unfeasible, but they're also poor policy. Laying off 10 percent of the state's workforce would deepen the economic crisis, not improve it. Transitioning to 401(k) plans away from the safety of the state's pension system would jeopardize the savings of employees (see the past eight years). That said ... the proposal to have HOPE pay more into education is terribly sane, and it ought to be implemented rather quickly.
- Athens-Clarke County District Eight Commissioner Andy Herod comes out for inclusionary zoning, which is very positive development. For a primer on the policy, read this.
